Buying Stock Before Customers Show Up
A business loan to purchase inventory solves one problem: suppliers want payment now, and customers buy later. A shop that orders a full season of goods, a distributor that buys a truckload to get a better unit price, or a store stocking a new product line all pay out weeks or months before the sales come in. Inventory financing carries that wait.
A loan to buy inventory for a boutique is one version. The owner places an order with a brand, the partner advances part of the cost, and the balance is repaid as the pieces sell. The partner wants to know the goods will sell at a margin that covers the financing cost, so bring sell-through numbers from earlier orders.
How Inventory Financing Works
- You identify the purchase: supplier, goods, cost and expected selling period
- The partner reviews your sales history and how quickly stock turns
- The partner advances a share of the inventory's value, which it decides, often paying the supplier directly
- The inventory secures the financing until it is sold or the balance is repaid
- You repay on a schedule or as goods sell, depending on the structure
How does inventory financing work if stock sits unsold? The obligation stays. That is why a partner may value goods that resell easily and ask more about fashion, perishable or highly specialized stock. Inventory financing for small business works when turnover is predictable; it strains when it is not.
Floor Plan Financing Meaning
Floor plan financing is a specific form of inventory financing for big-ticket, serial-numbered goods: vehicles, boats, trailers, large equipment. The lender pays for each unit on the lot, and the dealer repays that unit's balance when it sells. Interest accrues per unit while it waits, and lenders audit the lot to confirm the units are still there.
Floor plan financing fits dealers. Latah County, Idaho had four automobile dealer employer establishments in 2023 (County Business Patterns 2023); a retailer without serial-numbered stock may look at the standard inventory structures above.
Inventory Financing vs Factoring
Inventory financing is borrowing against goods you have not yet sold. Factoring is selling invoices you have already issued, at a discount, to get paid sooner. One funds the front of the sales cycle, the other the back. A wholesaler might use inventory financing to buy stock and, separately, factoring to collect from slow-paying accounts. Bayside Advances does not arrange factoring; we mention it so the two are not confused.
One Big Order or Many Small Restocks?
How to finance inventory depends on the pattern. One large, identifiable purchase fits inventory financing. Many small restocks through the year fit a revolving line of credit, which you draw for each order and repay as it sells. Some businesses use both: inventory financing for the big pre-season order, a line for top-ups.
A Stock-Order Example (Hypothetical)
Illustrative numbers only, not an offer. A Moscow, ID outdoor shop orders $36,000 of goods that it expects to sell over four months. It pays $9,000 from its own account. If the partner advances the remaining $27,000 and the shop's margin on the goods is 40%, the order should bring in about $60,000 in sales. The question is whether the financing cost, plus the risk of stock left over, fits inside the $24,000 gross margin.
Run that check before applying. If a third of the stock might not sell in time, the real margin shrinks and the financing may not pay.
